Welcome to the Design and Chemistry of Macromolecules Group website. I am the Director of the research group at ITPN and often Visiting Associate Professor at CWRU. Research and teaching are in different subjects, mainly referred to chemistry of macromolecules, polymers, and professional practice for engineering undergrads.

 

 

Thus, not only the immediate design and synthesis of the materials themselves are considered, but also that of their precursors and building blocks. This allows for tailoring architectures with specific functionalities which are not limited by possible inaccessibility to commercially available raw material. Being able to synthesize any specific monomer let us obtain complex, functional, and functionalized polymeric materials possessing properties planned by design. 


The ultimate goal of my group is to develop the knowledge and capability of my students to carry out their projects but having the possibility to interconnect different subjects, thus making interdisciplinary research at real time as a part of their education. In order to achieve this, I collaborate with chemists, materials scientists, physicians, physicists, bioengineers, mechanical and civil engineers, as well as industry partners.

The  main  focus of my  researches is on understanding  and  exploiting the  structure-property-functionality relationship to then use it in the generation of  novel additives and (nano-)materials. To   achieve  these  goals, especial emphasis is put on the design, synthesis, modification, and chemical characterization of specifically functionalized monomers, polymers and hybrid systems. Reverse engineering is often utilized to address our syntheses to specific targeted structures. Similarly, retrosynthetic analysis is realized to design the building blocks needed in each the step throughout the syntheses.
